Susan Baylus, O.D.
Chief of Service, Contact Lenses
Dr. Baylus graduated from The New England College of Optometry in 1989. After completing her Fellowship in Primary Eye Care and Education at The School, she joined the faculty where she developed the outreach services program and into Home Eye Services. The program was doing mostly screenings, and she made it into a full-service program, adding free care including obtaining donations for eyeglasses to homeless services like Rosie's Place, and Women's Lunch Place. Dr. Baylus also developed the second year Problem-Based Learning program with other faculty members.
After seven years with the faculty, Dr. Baylus left the school to work with Dr. Bradford Shingleton, a successful cataract and glaucoma surgeon in the Boston area. Dr. Baylus was responsible for providing pre- and post-op care for many of Dr. Shingleton's patients on Cape Cod as well as Boston, as well as primary eye care and contact lens.
Dr. Baylus then joined Lexington Eye Associates, where she practiced for five years as their contact lens specialist. Dr. Baylus was responsible for Lexington Eye's “hard-to-fit” patients, including soft and hard bifocals, keratoconus, post-surgical irregular corneas and pediatric aphakics. She initiated participation in the The New England College of Optometry's Contact Lens Residency Program in 2004. The program grew from one resident every other week to two residents two days a week every week.
Dr. Baylus rejoined the faculty at The College as their Chief of Service for the Contact Lens Department and is thrilled to be teaching again. Dr. Baylus lives in Brookline with her husband and teenage triplets.
