Jeanette M. Sewell, O.D.

Attending Optometrist

Dr. Sewell has been affiliated with the New England College of Optometry and New England Eye Institute for almost 30 years. For 25 years Dr. Sewell was Director of Eye Care Services for Dimock Community Health Center (now The Dimock Center) where she coordinated one of the largest teaching sites for NEEI. At Dimock, Dr. Sewell developed the first community based optometric residency program in the country, still one of only two Residencies in Community Health Optometry in the nation. Dr. Sewell also Chaired the Clinical Teaching Quality Assurance Committee for the New England College of Optometry. In 1992 Dr. Sewell received the OUTSTANDING MASSACHUSETTS HEALTH CENTER CLINICIAN AWARD from the Massachusetts League of Community Health Centers.

Through her work at Dimock, Dr. Sewell developed an interest in community based health care, cultural competency and clinical education. After leaving Dimock Dr. Sewell became a full time faculty member at NECO where she is an Instructor in the Contact Lens Laboratory and in the Integrative Seminar course. She is the Assistant to the Director of Residencies at the College and is working alongside the NEEI Vice President of Community Collaborations on the Institute's Cultural and Linguistic Competency Initiative, funded by grants from the Blue Cross Blue Shield Foundation of Massachusetts.

Dr. Sewell is a member of the American Optometric Association and the Massachusetts Society of Optometrists. She earned her Doctor of Optometry degree from The New England College of Optometry where she graduated as Valedictorian of her 1981 class.

Dr. Sewell lives in a suburb of Boston with her husband, Peter and son, Quentin. When she is not cheering on Quentin's soccer, baseball or basketball teams she is cheering for her beloved Boston Red Sox.
