Catherine Johnson, O.D., F.A.A.O.
Director, New England Eye Renaissance School Vision Center
Dr. Johnson grew up in London, Ontario, Canada and earned an Honors Bachelor of Science in Biology and Psychology at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario in 2002. She graduated from The New England College of Optometry (NECO) in 2006 and completed a Residency in Pediatric Optometry at NECO in 2007, for which she was honored to receive the Terrance Ingraham Pediatric Optometry Residency Award.
Dr. Johnson joined the NECO faculty in the Department of Specialty and Advanced Care shortly after completing her residency. In 2007, she gained Fellowship to the American Academy of Optometry (AAO) and continues to be an active member of the AAO, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology and the American Public Health Association.
Dr. Johnson splits her time between patient care at New England Eye (NEE) affiliated sites, research and teaching at NECO, all of which revolve around the care of children and individuals with disabilities. In 2007, Dr. Johnson worked with the NEE and Boston Renaissance Charter Public school to develop the first school-based pediatric eye clinic in Boston, the New England Eye/Renaissance School Vision Center, where she is now Director.
She is also a Consulting Optometrist at the New England Eye Low Vision at Perkins where she provides care to patients with vision impairment and multiple disabilities. Dr. Johnson's research projects revolve around developing new clinical vision tests for children with multiple disabilities, evaluation of visual assessment tools with application to developing vision care programs in developing countries, and development and assessment of new models of pediatric eye care delivery. Dr. Johnson has also enjoyed participating in several eye care missions to Central America.
